The “Transport Engineering and Control Technologies” chair was estableshed in Februaru 2021 by joining the “Automotive Engineering” and the “Railway Transports Exploitation” chairs. The “Automotive Engineering” chair was estableshed in November 2015 by joining the “Internal Combustion Engines, Automobiles and Tractors” and the “Automobile transport means” chairs.

The chair "Automobile transport means" began its activity in 1940 at the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute, entitled “Exploitation of road transport”. S.V.Valedinski was the first head of the chair. It was the first Chair of the special training involved in the preparation of specialists for the road transport industry in Azerbaijan. Within a very short period of time (1941-1947 years) faculty was formed from among the graduates of the department, who actively participated in the creation of its material and technical base. In 1950, when creating the Azerbaijan Politechnical Institute, the chair was included in its composition and the first rector of the Institute Ph.D., docent M.T.Mammadov also was the head of this department. At various times, the chair was headed by docent J.R.Dadashov, prof. F.G.Suleimanova, docent A.R.Rzayev, docent A.Z.Verdiyev, docent S.K.Gozalov, docent R.T.Mamedov.

The “Internal Combustion Engines, Automobiles and Tractors” chair was established in 1962 under the name "Heat Technique and Heat Engines" on the basis of the Chairs "General Heat Technique" and "Automobiles". Creator of the Chair is the founder of the national scientific school on the internal combustion engines, Honored Worker of Science and Technique of Azerbaijan Republic, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Niyazi Kerimov. Prof. N.Kerimov headed this department for 27 years. At the initiative of prof. N.Kerimov in 1975 on the basis of the Chair "Heat Technique and Heat Engines" was created the Chair of "Internal combustion engines and refrigerators". In 1997 the Chair was renamed to the Chair "Internal Combustion Engines, Automobiles and Tractors". In the sequel this chair was headed by prof. I.Mehdiyev, docent A.Ismailov and prof. Z.Kerimov.

Since 1969, at the chair have been training an engineers on the specialty "Internal Combustion Engines ". From 1967 to 1997 was carried out training engineers on the specialty "Refrigerating Machines". Since 1991 the preparation of specialists on the specialty "Automobiles and Tractors". Since the 60-s of the last century in the chair is carried out through postgraduate training of researchers on "Heat Engines". Until 1997, also conducted training of researchers on "Refrigerating Machines" and since 1993, the preparation of the scientific staff on "Automobiles and Tractors". Over the past period, the chair had prepared dozens of Ph.D. and 4 doctors of technical sciences for the former Soviet Union, the Azerbaijan Republic, as well as for foreign countries such as India, Iraq, Syria and Vietnam.
