Mechanical Engineering and Robotics

Department of Mechanics

Mechanics is the scientific basis of modern technology, machines and mechanisms, various constructions, bridges and facilities. This science is one of the oldest sciences that arose from the practical needs of man. The development of ancient mechanics Aristotle, Archimedes, Ptolemy, etc. it is related to the name of scientists and philosophers of the ancient world. Leonardo da Vinci, R. Hook, G. Galileo, I. Newton, D. Bernoulli, etc. created by medieval scholars. In the development of modern mechanics, Azerbaijani scientists, including Nobel laureate Lev Landau, prof. Zahid Khalilov, prof. Habib Mammadov, Acad. Azad Mirzajanzadeh, prof. Niftulla Gadirov, prof. Tofiq Bektashi and other prominent scientists had great services.

The Department of Mechanics started working as part of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (AzPI), which was established in 1920, and after the second restoration of the AzPI in 1950, it has undergone a great development. Over the years, the technical base of the department has been significantly improved, new teaching and research laboratories have been created. The department offers a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (050628) for the undergraduate level of education, and a master's degree in the specialization of mechanical engineering (060630) in the field of hydromechanics and hydraulic machines, stability and dynamics of machines, fluid and gas transport equipment, hydraulic machines, hydro-injections and hydro-pneumatic automation.

The department offers theoretical mechanics, applied mechanics, technical mechanics, resistance of materials, hydraulics and hydraulic machines, fluid and gas mechanics, hydrology, pipelines and fittings, etc. for undergraduate level, and mechanical mechanics, theory of oscillations, experimental mechanics, elasticity for graduate level. and plasticity theory, stability of mechanical systems, nanomechanics, special purpose pumps, compressors and compressor stations, pump station equipment, calculation and design of pipelines, etc. subjects are taught.

Currently, the department, which has a great historical tradition, has extensive relations with leading universities of the European Union and the United States. Monographs and scientific articles of the department's employees are regularly published in prestigious international scientific publications. The professors of the department are members of editorial boards of various international scientific journals and leaders of European Union scientific projects (7th Framework Program, HORIZON2020, etc.).

In April 2011, by the decision of the Scientific Council of AzTU, the Departments of Theoretical Mechanics and Strength of Materials were merged and named the Department of Technical Mechanics. In May 2016, the Department of Mechanics was established on the basis of the Departments of Technical Mechanics and Hydraulics and Hydropneumo Devices.

The Theoretical Mechanics Department of the current Department of Mechanics was organized in 1921 as part of AzPI. During this period, the Departments of Theoretical Mechanics, Strength of Materials and Applied Mechanics functioned as one department. Head of the first department Prof. P.P. Lukin. At that time, the department head was prof. G.A. Khazarov, prof. K.A. Pakrovsky and other prominent scientists were active. In 1950, when AzPI resumed its activities, one of the first established departments was the Department of Theoretical Mechanics. Heads of the department from that period: prof. Habib Gurban oglu Mammadov (1951-1966), prof. Ataulla Fattah oglu Gasimov (1967-1970), prof. Niftulla Bashir oglu Gadirov (1971-1972), prof. Rza Abdul oglu Badalov (1972-1976), prof. Vladimir Yakovlevich Dunin (1976), prof. Rafik Nabi oglu Mahmudov (1976-1984), prof. Frunze Hasangulu oglu Shamiyev (1985-1993), prof. Rafik Nabi Mahmudov (1993-2005), prof. Nasib Ayvaz oglu Nasibov (2005-2011), prof. Vagif Mirahmad oglu Mirsalimov (Technical Mechanics, 2011-2016), prof. Valeh Bakhshali (2016-present).

The Department of Strength of Materials of the current Department of Mechanics has been operating under different names within AzPI since 1920. Head of the first department was prof. L.S. Leybenzon. On the basis of that Department, in 1950, when AzPI started its activities again, a technical department was created under the name of Strength of Materials and Construction Mechanics, and soon after this department received the name of Strength of Materials. After this period, the department was headed by: Prof. Huseynaga S. Muradkhanov (1950-1954), Prof. Hanifa Abdulrahman oglu Süleymanov (1954-1974), Prof. Ibrahim Agamurad oglu Bakhtiyarov (1975), Prof. Ismayil Rza oglu Sadigov (1975-1983), Prof. Najiba Kazim gizi Ibrahimova (1983), Prof. Vagif Mirahmad oglu Mirsalimov (1983-2016).

The current Hydraulics section of the Department of Mechanics was first established in 1922 as part of AzPI. At that time, the name of the department was Hydraulics and hydraulic mechanisms, and the first department head was prof. I.Q. Yesman. In 1950, when AzPI was restored for the second time, the Department of Hydraulics and Hydraulic Machines was organized on the basis of the existing base. After that time, the heads of the department: Prof. Suleyman Abdulakhairovich Abdurashidov (1950-1955), prof. Anvar Abdulrahman oglu Shikhalizadeh (1955-1959), prof. Ataulla Faraj oglu Gasimov (1969-1981), prof. Humbat Pasha oglu Huseynov (1981-1992), prof. Samad Oruj oglu Huseynov (1992-2014), prof. Rasim Shirin oglu Ismayilov (2014-2016).
